2020-2021 Webinar Series and Communities of Practice Introduction

For 2020-2021, in light of the need to continue to support the success of campus programs as they navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact, the Bonner Foundation is adapting its work to replace in-person meetings (at least for fall 2020) with web-based professional development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. By February 2021, we will also determine plans for the Summer Leadership Institute format, which may again be offered online.
Over the course of October 2020 to May 2021, these webinar series will also provide an opportunity for small Communities of Practice (about 10-15 people each) to meet every month, forging relationships and depth in their conversations and learning. At the same time, some of the individual webinars will be open to the Bonner Network at large, allowing for individuals to register for those that interest them.
Each webinar series offers opportunities to build relationships and community across our national community, while gaining valuable education, training, and professional development to succeed in one’s work. These sessions will seek to provide the sense of community, shared vision, authenticity, and connection of both theory and practice that is found at Bonner national meetings. These sessions will be discussion oriented, with opportunities to share and learn across campuses and to wrestle with real life issues and challenges.

Webinars Targeted for Student Leaders
Bonner Professional Development Pipeline Seminar Series - Emerging Leaders Level
Student leaders can apply to be a part of the Emerging Leaders level of the broader four-level Professional Development Pipeline series. Participants can include Bonner Senior Interns, Bonner Leadership Team members, Congress Representatives, or other student leaders. Students who attend at least six webinars, including three core topics and three electives, earn a Certification. Core topics include peer leadership, program management, and diversity and equity issues. Electives will also be cultivated from across the Bonner Network, thus allowing student leaders to offer web-based workshops. Certification benefits include a personal profile on the Bonner website; at least one professional coaching conversation with a more senior or experienced leader from another institution or organization in the field; recognition as a part of a national fellowship program and endorsement of one’s work on LinkedIn; and the opportunity to participate in special events, such as a graduate school fair. Up to 10 students who take on an additional independent project developing a resource (such as a webinar, training, or research project) for the Bonner Network can also earn $200. Bonner Alumni Ambassadors Series
This series is especially targeted for student leaders who are working to expand their program’s engagement with alumni. Participants will learn how to develop an outreach strategy, segment their alumni population, deploy their resources, and most effectively engage their alumni. Through ongoing group discussions, participants will engage in an integrated approach to foster alumni engagement at colleges and universities in the Bonner Network. Designed as a learning community for rising leaders, this series is intended to maintain a sense of community and collaboration among the Bonner Programs in their effort to re-engage alumni into the Bonner Community. Mobilizing for Communities, Racial Justice, and Equity
This series is targeted for students and staff working to lead initiatives that use Bonner funds to promote racial justice, address current challenges and issues, and strengthen their communities. Intended to support students to leverage their Bonner Community Fund, Bonner Racial Justice Community Fund, and other local resources and assets, webinars will provide a space for participants to engage in learning from each other and from recognized leaders at a variety of nonprofit, government, and activist organizations. Through a series of web-based seminars, students will gain confidence, direction, and skills in program and project design and management. They will also sharpen their awareness about how to build diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racist practices into their work, regardless of its focus. Additionally, participants will expand their networks and gain connections and ideas that will help them succeed. Review the full outline here. Leadership Series
This series will provide participants with an opportunity to reflect deeply on and expand their approaches to leadership. Participants will read Brene Brown’s Dare to Lead, engaging in activities to identify their own primary values and character traits as leaders. They will engage in learning and sharing, drawing on a variety of fields and speakers, about leadership. Participants can include students, staff, and faculty. Review full outline here. Webinars Targeted for Staff, Administrators, & Faculty
Bonner Professional Development Pipeline Seminar Series - Young Professionals, Mid-Career Professionals, or Senior Professionals Options
Staff and administrators can apply to be a part of one of three levels of the broader four-level Professional Development Pipeline series.
- The Young Professionals Level is designed especially for Bonner Coordinators, VISTA Leaders, and Other Staff with 1-54 years experience. Core topics include student development (theory and practice), managing community partnerships and projects, and fundamentals of community engagement (including a knowledge of the field). First Wednesday of each month at 3 pm EST.
- The Mid-Career Professionals Level is designed especially for veteran Bonner Coordinators, Bonner Directors, and other staff with 5-10 years experience. Core topics include engaging faculty; strategic partnerships and capacity building; and program management, planning, & assessment. First Thursday of each month at 3 pm EST.
- The Senior-Level Professionals Level is designed especially for veteran Bonner Directors, Center Directors, Faculty, and other administrators with 10+ years experience. Core topics include navigating institutional change and structure; building center infrastructure (strategic planning, fundraising, grant research & writing); and working with faculty to design community-engaged curriculum. First Thursday of each month at 3 pm EST.

Advancing Community-Engaged Learning in Higher Education
This series is especially targeted for faculty and administrators. It is intended to advance the knowledge of participating practitioners in their own course design, facilitation of community partnerships, teaching and mentoring of students, and work on institutional change. Participants will have the opportunity to wrestle with, apply, and refine ideas as they implement them within their own teaching, learning, scholarship, and programs. At the same time, through the Community of Practice, participants will produce new knowledge to shape the field. Participants also have the opportunity to design and implement an independent project (such as a course, article, or institutional change initiative), later published in a compendium by the Bonner Foundation, and earn $200. Teaching Social Action Series
This series is especially designed for faculty and administrators who seek to develop a social action course or pathway at their institution. It draws on a successful course model from Professor Scott Myers-Lipton at San José State University. Participants read Change!, a book that profiles this model, as well as a teaching guide available from the replication of the course at 12 institutions so far offered here on the Bonner Wiki. Through ongoing webinars, Scott Myers-Lipton and other instructors share their syllabi, teaching approach, course assignments, and other models. The outline is under development and will be posted soon.
