The 2016 Bonner Congress Meeting was hosted at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. The meeting was centered around Dr. Martin Luther King's vision of the Beloved Community, a vision of global unity, reconciliation, and commitment to nonviolence. Along with the emphasis on the Beloved Community, the meeting was also centered on activities and workshops that were meant to encourage student voice, skill and professional development, networking among students, and training to bring Ideas into Action through a student-led project. Below are some documents and resources that may be used to further support Congress Representatives throughout the year.

Ideas to Action

From Ideas to Action Presentation & Worksheets (Idea Profile & Action Planning)

Though the From Ideas to Action sessions at Bonner Congress were specifically geared toward each campus' particular project, the process of bringing ideas to action may be applied toward any project. Below are the presentation and blank copies of the Idea Profile and Action Planning Worksheets to be used as a resource for future initiatives.

Alternatives to the Idea Profile

During the From Ideas to Action sessions, two alternatives to the Idea Profile were mentioned. When assessing the issue or opportunity as it applies to your idea, feel free to choose between the Context Map, SWOT/SPOT Analysis, or Idea Profile to find the one that works best for your initiative.

Training Modules

These trainings can serve as useful tools to continue progressing toward your From Ideas to Action project goals:

    • Cover Story
      • The Cover Story engages participants in a creative visioning exercise to imagine their idea, project, or organization as a “cover story” for a published magazine. This activity involves a variety of tasks — including silent brainstorming, drawing, coming up with clever slogans — which provide people with many ways to explore their visions, ideas, and goals. It helps a team or group to articulate a shared vision through a process that can be engaging and fun.

    • Planning Effective Meetings
      • It’s no secret that community involvement and projects require lots of meetings. A meeting can make or break the planning process for a project, can inspire people to work hard or help to decide to tune out, and can help build an inclusive community or alienate people. This workshop provides a basic overview for how to plan an effective meeting. It introduces participants to considerations of planning agendas, structuring information, and designing activities for meetings. It teaches participants how to use structure to plan and run meetings that are purposeful and guide a group to achieve its goals.

    • Time Management: Manage By Calendar
      • Managing by calendar is a great technique for managing your time and project. In brief, it allows the calendar and time you have available to be used as a backbone for organizing and driving how you spend your time. Used consistently, managing by calendar gives the project manager and team a tool for sorting out competing and complex work assignments and prioritizing work.
