Founded in 1859 as a school for young women, Averett grew to become a fully accredited, co-educational, four-year college in 1971. Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs: 

• Averett 101, our first year experience course, is co-taught by 2nd year Bonner Leaders. Each Bonner Leader develops their class' service-learning project by 1- developing content in the 1-credit Averett 101 Mentoring course and 2- connecting their students to the Bonner Leader's service site.  
• 1st year Bonner Leaders are in their own section of Averett 101 taught by the Bonner Director.

The Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness serves as the catalyst to connect Points of Light (students, staff, and faculty) from Averett University, Danville Community College, Piedmont Community College, and local primary and secondary schools to community partners to lead capacity-building transformations in the Dan River Region, centered on three areas of need: economic opportunities, youth and education, and civil and human rights.
