CAMPUS AT A GLANCE & KEY FACTS

Known affectionately as Sewanee, The University of the South was founded in 1857 by clergy and lay delegates from Episcopal dioceses throughout the south. Situated on top of the Cumberland plateau, the university rests on a domain of 13,000 forested acres 45 minutes west of Chattanooga and 1 1/2 hours east of Nashville.  It is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in close community and in full freedom of inquiry, and enlightened by Christian faith in the Anglican tradition, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds, to the end that students be prepared to search for truth, seek justice, preserve liberty under law, and serve God and humanity.

The University is comprised of both an undergraduate college and an Episcopal seminary.  Almost all of our students live on campus and the university puts great emphasis on faculty/student and staff/student relationships.

Interesting Facts:

  • Sewanee is the only university in the nation that is owned and governed by dioceses of the Episcopal Church, specifically the 28 dioceses of the southeastern United States.
  • Another interesting fact: We love our traditions - such as tapping the roof of your car when you leave campus to "catch" your angel and take with you, never stepping foot on the university seal in All Saints Chapel before graduation, and wearing your gown to class.
  • Student population: Approximately 1,700 students
  • Town population: Fewer than 1,700.
