Section IV: Finances

4.1 Bonner Leader Financial Aid Package

4.1.1 Federal Work-Study

  • Bonner Leaders must be packaged with Federal Work-Study or an equivalent level stipend for the community service they perform to meet their Bonner Leader service requirement so that Bonner Leaders can afford to serve 225-280 hours per school year (which is equal to 8-10 hours per week x 14 weeks per semester).

4.1.2 Bonner Summer Stipend Support

  • If the institution has available funds, we recommend that the Bonner Leader Program incorporate a summer service option for Bonner Leaders.

4.1.3 Consideration for International or Undocumented Students

  • We encourage schools to include international or undocumented students in their Bonner Leader Programs, recognizing that these students will not qualify for Federal funding which means that the stipend support will have to come from other institutional funds.

4.2 Term of Scholarship

4.2.1 Four-year Program

  • The Bonner Leader Program is a four-year service-based program that provides financial support to students for a total of eight semesters (and up to three summers if funding is available).

4.2.2 Leaves of Absence

  • Students may take a leave of absence from the program and/or the college and should still remain eligible for the remainder of their four years of Bonner financial aid support.
  • Students on leave should not be replaced if they are expected to return. However, if a student who withdraws during their leave is replaced by another student but then subsequently decides to return to college, the replaced student must join the pool of replacement candidates to be considered for re-admission into the program.

4.2.3 Off-Campus Programs

  • Bonner Leaders participating in off-campus programs (e.g., Washington, DC semester, junior year abroad, exchange) who are still eligible for Bonner financial aid support may continue to meet the Bonner Leader Program's service expectation of 10 hours per week during their enrollment in these programs.
