CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

Mathematical Applications Shine To Encourage Rising Scholars

MASTERS is an after-school math enrichment program where Spelman College students work with 3rd-middle school-aged students in the Washington Cluster. In this program, participants complete engaging projects that incorporate basic math. Ultimately, young students will learn why understanding math is an invaluable skill.

Girl-Power Foundation, Inc. (GRL-PWR) is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to empowering young girls. GRL-PWR’s mission is to teach young girls the importance of building strong self-esteem, setting goals to achieve, and serving others.

Spelman College embarked on a mission with BookNook, Inc. to increase literacy prevention in primary grade students throughout the Washington Cluster Schools with the emphasis on 3rdgrade reading proficiency.  In the spring of 2018, Hollis Innovation Academy was the first school paired with the Spelman College students in partnership with the BookNook, Inc. literacy program.  BookNook’s online reading program provides a reading initiative that is individualized, adaptive, engaging with a high rating of improvement in reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.

BookNook, Inc. designed an individualized reading program to target deficiencies of identified students who are reading below grade levels at the following schools: Hollis Innovation Academy, Brown Middle School, Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy, and M. Agnes Jones Elementary. Weekly reports monitor students’ progress. Spelman students work closely with these students implementing the prescribed reading strategies to ensure success. In addition, quarterly assessments and post-tests will be utilized to determine growth.

During the 2018-2019 school year, SpelREADS recruited, trained, and provided in-service trainings for all SpelREADS Reading Guides.  In addition, the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement hosted monthly reflection dinners and an end of semester wrap-up reception for all participants. Schools student participants also had an opportunity to visit Spelman campus to experience a day in the life on a college campus. We also plan to expand the SpelREADS Program to include a family at-home track where parents can be trained to assist their children at home and during official school closures and breaks.
