CAMPUS AT A GLANCE & KEY FACTS

Rhodes is a national, four-year, private, coeducational, residential college committed to the liberal arts and sciences. Our highest priorities are intellectual engagement, service to others and honor among ourselves. We enjoy one of the country’s most beautiful campuses in the heart of Memphis, an economic, political and cultural center, making Rhodes one of a handful of prominent liberal arts colleges located in a major metropolitan area. Rhodes is profiled in The Princeton Review’s recently released The Best 381 Colleges for 2017, and ranks No. 1 on its Most Beautiful Campus list and No. 2 for Most Engaged in Community Service. For two years in a row, Rhodes was named America’s #1 Service-Oriented College by Newsweek magazine.

BONNER PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

Type of Program: Bonner Scholarship Program

Year Began: 1992

Bonner Program Website: https://www.rhodes.edu/content/bonner-scholar-program

Application Deadlines for 21-22:

Where is the Bonner Program located: Bonner Center for Service, 2nd Floor of HR Building West Campus

Number of Bonner Students: 15 per class; 60 in total

Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs:

  • First-Year Trip: First-year Bonner students participate in a week-long service trip at the end of the academic year. The service trip takes place in a different geographic location; past locations have included Chicago and Denver. While on the service trip, first-year Bonners are encouraged to reflect on the similarities and differences between Memphis and the location of their trip in order to have conversations about what the two locations may be able to learn from one another.
  • Sophomore Exchange: In their sophomore year, Bonners participate in a week-long exchange with another Bonner college. The exchange reminds students that there are other Bonner programs doing different kinds of social justice work all over the country, and allows students to share ideas and experiences with other Bonners.

CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

  • Rhodes College Kinney Program: The Kinney Program is a student-run initiative aimed at getting all Rhodes students involved in community service throughout Memphis. Often led by Bonner Scholars and other community service oriented students, Kinney Coordinators create focus groups that revolve around specific social issues (such as Hunger and Homelessness or Education). These focus groups facilitate information sessions about their topic issue and encourage participation at non-profit organizations that address their topic issue.
  • CityLynx: Incoming first-years have the opportunity to apply for CityLynx if they meet the financial requirement. CityLynx is an option similar to campus work-study programs. Rather than work on campus, CityLynx students complete community service hours at non-profit organizations in Memphis. When applying for the program, students may pick between two interest tracts: Hunger and Homelessness, and Education.
  • Rhodes College Memphis Center: The Memphis Center provides support for research and education regarding the history of Memphis and civil rights initiatives. The Center provides resources for academic courses, has a collection of scholarly archives, and hosts yearly conferences.
