Bonner Network Models

Allegheny University

Allegheny University’s Sophomore Year Round Issue Brief Project has been adapted to align with the work of the Bonner students. This is an intensive training that provides the opportunity for students to get to know the community that they serve, and refine specific skills that can be used at their sites. Looking towards the future, the issue brief project helps Bonners practice the process for capstones. They are guided through the steps by learning about the project’s application to Bonner, using guiding questions, handouts, and flowcharts. Below are Issue Brief Handouts and some examples of “Issue Briefs” prepared by students at Allegheny College.

Siena College

In Spring 2015 the Siena College Center for Academic Community Engagement (ACE) founded the Community Policy Institute (CPI) to engage faculty, staff, and community partners in exploring the impact public policy can have on vulnerable populations. CPI Fellows researched public policies and regulations related to policy questions identified by the associations, networks, and collaboratives they partnered with.

During Spring 2019, CPI joined forces with ACE's Nonprofit Excellence in Transformation (NExT) Services, which engages teams of students in research projects on topics of social justice, policy, organizational partnerships, community change, program, and organizational impact. Through this new structure, typically one team conducts a project each semester looking at a research question with a focus of policy in the community.

  • Partnership for the Public Good:  Partnership for the Public Good helps community groups and individuals in Buffalo Niagara develop stronger, better-informed voices. We do it by producing action-oriented research, policy development, and tools for citizen engagement. Since 2007, our work has been dedicated to effecting lasting, positive change in our community.
  • Buffalo Commons:  Created with the help of educators, students, volunteers, interns, and independent researchers, our rich body of reports, policy briefs, and fact sheets can now be found in the Buffalo Commons.
  •  High Road Summer Fellowship Program "Experiential learning & solution-driven research":  Since 2009, this fellowship program has provided opportunities for Cornell undergraduate students to participate as a group in research, engaged learning and service in community-based economic development in Buffalo.

Dartmouth College

  • Policy Research Shop: The Class of 1964 Policy Research Shop (PRS) is a student-staffed, faculty-mentored research enterprise that allows students to engage directly in the public policymaking processes in Vermont and New Hampshire by providing valuable, non-partisan research to state legislative committees, statewide commissions, and executive agencies on critical issues facing each state. Students begin their work with an intensive policy research class in the fall term, which can be followed by additional research as an independent study or as a paid researcher. Students meet directly with elected officials and staff as they develop and refine high-quality research products. Once the policy briefs are completed, the students travel to Concord and Montpelier to present their findings in formal testimonies. All of the policy briefs are produced for policymakers on pro bono basis.
