Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs:
- AmplifyHER serves middle school students by mentoring girls to find their voice and practice their public speaking skills. AmplifyHER aims to increase girls' confidence and to empower girls to speak-up and make their mark on the world. Mentors also tutor participating students in fundamental reading and writing skills which support their overall speaking and presentation program.
- Austin Test Prep (ATP) - This is an SAT and college prep program at Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston, a program based on a previous UH Bonner project and adapted to this new partner location. Bonners have tutored juniors and seniors since spring of 2015 when the program was launched. In addition to tutoring the high schoolers on SAT material, the Bonners also help the students and their families navigate the college-application process. Many students at Austin High will be the first in their family to attend college.
- Food Insecurity Team (FIT) - FIT carries on the mission of what used to be the Campus Kitchen project at UH, fighting food insecurity in Houston. FIT members operate and develop food markets in partnership with the Houston Food Bank and local community organizations such as New Hope Housing, Inc. and Riverside Methodist Church. During the summer of 2020, FIT leadership is reimagining itself and considering additional and more deeply engaged ways to bolster community efforts to improve food security and nutrition in Houston.
- ImpACT - ImpACT was created based on the ATP model of test prep (above) run by the UH Bonner Program in order to accommodate community partner KIPP Charter Schools in Houston who focus on the ACT rather than the SAT. Currently, ImpACT mentors work with students from KIPP Sunnyside and KIPP Houston on ACT prep, college knowledge and financial aid resources, and college readiness skills.
- Math Confidence through Cubing Club (MC3) - MC3 mentors teach students at Navarro Middle School on math content knowledge and confidence through traditional tutoring as well as teaching students to master the Rubik's Cube. MC3 mentors empower middle school students to approach math as a skill they can learn and inspire students to achieve their dreams by showing them that they can master difficult skills, like solving a Rubik's Cube! Mentors also run character education models to support their partner school's goal to reduce negative behavioral outcomes like fighting, drug and alcohol abuse, and other similar risky behaviors.
- Science Mentoring for Achieving a Richer Tomorrow (SMART) - This science tutoring and mentoring project supplements science instruction for 5th-graders at Shearn Elementary School by pairing mentors with students to conduct laboratory-based science experiments and practice assignments in an after school program. Since 2018, SMART mentors have worked to mentor students in both science and the soft skills necessary for academic success, and they aim to instill a love of learning and sense of confidence into their mentees.
- Writing to Inspire Successful Education (WISE) - This program is a fourth-grade writing tutoring program conducted in partnership with Briscoe Elementary School. WISE mentors aim to prepare students for the fourth-grade STAAR writing test and to support their reading and writing education for continued academic success and confidence. Bonners accomplish this by providing in-person mentorship and tutoring on foundational writing skills as an augmentation to students' standard writing curriculum, as well as mentoring students and instilling confidence and self-efficacy.
