CAMPUS AT A GLANCE & KEY FACTS

Located in the heart of Boston, Simmons University is a private university, home to a respected women’s undergraduate program, as well as coeducational graduate programs in nursing and health sciences, liberal arts, business, communications, social work, public health, and library and information science.

Simmons has established a model of higher education that only today other colleges and universities are beginning to adapt: the combination of education for leadership in high-demand professional fields with the intellectual foundation of the liberal arts. The result is a Simmons graduate prepared not only to work, but to lead in professional, civic, and personal life — a vision of empowerment that Simmons calls preparation for life’s work.

CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

For more than 100 years, Simmons University has inspired its students to combine learning with action for a more just and equitable world. Today, the Center for Community Engagement at Simmons takes the lead in advancing this commitment to visionary education and civic engagement by building on our strengths as a women-centered university at the undergraduate level and our commitment to leadership development.

The office works closely with nearly 60 community-based organizations to provide opportunities for student-leadership and community benefit. Whether it's tackling social justice issues such as the education achievement gap, mentoring girls for advancement and success, or becoming a penpal to a middle-school student, we offer our entire campus a variety of ways to get involved, among them, stimulating service-learning courses and exciting all-University signature initiatives.

Through reciprocal partnerships with community-based organizations, Simmons Community Engagement aims to:

  1. Broaden and deepen community-based learning at Simmons.

  2. Support faculty in their goals to expand community-based research.

  3. Cultivate a readiness for civic agency in our students.

  4. Promote women’s leadership and girls’ advancement and success.

  5. Develop engaged and socially responsible leaders.

At the Center for Community Engagement, we recognize and support a breadth of community-based learning approaches. This includes more traditional service opportunities, but also other approaches such as civic engagement initiatives, co-learning with community members, community tours, etc. Through our work, we have strong relationships with many community partners and are here to help build new partnerships where needed. We believe that at its best community–based learning is a high-impact pedagogy which can enhance student learning while providing tangible benefits to communities.
