Course Description
Civic Engagement in Higher Education has had a long and episodic history in the United States; in the past decades, however, interest in civic engagement as a way of fulfilling the democratic purposes of higher education has increased noticeably. This course will critically examine the philosophical, theoretical, historical, and programmatic dimensions of the current civic engagement movement as well as the implications for institutional commitment and culture.

This course offers an opportunity for students to integrate course material with their own professional interests through an individual project.

Course Faculty:
John Saltmarsh teaches in the Higher Education Doctoral Program of the Department of Leadership in Education in the College of Education and Human Development. He is the author, most recently, of a co-edited volume Publicly Engaged Scholars: Next Generation Engagement and the Future of Higher Education(2016). He also co-edited “To Serve a Larger Purpose:” Engagement for Democracy and the Transformation of Higher Education (2011) and co-authored Higher Education and Democracy: Essays on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (2011). He is also the author of numerous book chapters and articles on civic engagement, service-learning, and experiential education, and the co-author of the Democratic Engagement White Paper(NERCHE, 2009) and Full Participation: Building the Architecture for Diversity and Public Engagement in Higher Education (2011). He is an associate editor for the Michigan Journal of Community Service-Learning, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement, Metropolitan Universities Journal, the eJournal of Public Affairs and the advisory board of Diversity and Democracy. He leads the administration of the Carnegie Foundation’s Community Engagement Classification. He also serves on the National Advisory Board of Imagining America, as a member of the board of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE), and as a member of Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Coordinating Committee Members of the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Action.
