Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs:
- Since its inception, our Bonner Program was been built around the needs and strengths of first generation college students. One example of this is our digital storytelling project “First in Our Families" short films. The films focus on the reflections and experiences of first generation students at Macalester and beyond. Over half of the workshop participants were Bonner Scholars and we encourage you to view their powerful videos here.
- In light of the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, our Bonner Program was featured on the homepage of MN Campus Compact and was also picked up by National Campus Compact website highlighting the partnerships and our work in NOLA.
CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

Macalester is a long-time leader in linking academic learning to community involvement. High quality community-based learning (CBL) brings forth multiple layers of learning, teaching and problem solving. Civic engagement classes integrate coursework with collaborative community research and/or other work with community groups. Pedagogies encompass community-based learning, community-based research, internships, and policy research as required or optional components of a course.
- In addition to our academic community-based learning, the Community Engagement Center at Macalester College facilitates multiple programs that foster learning, dialogue and ethical action about issues of local, national and international concern.
