BONNER PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

Type of Program: Bonner Scholars Program

Year Began: 1991

Bonner Program Website: www.davidson.edu/bonnerscholars

Application Deadline: Rolling

Where is the Bonner Program located: Division of Student Life

Number of Bonner Students: 80

Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs:

  • Ada Jenkins LEARNWorks Afterschool Program - Many first-year Bonners volunteer with this local partner and work with 1st-8th graders on literacy and math utilizing the Love and Logic model.  Many other Bonners (as well as many other Davidson students, including Federal Community Service Work-Study students) also volunteer here in various roles, many in leadership.
  • Monthly Study Halls - To encourage academic engagement in addition to community engagement the Bonner Leadership Team hosts evening study halls in the Center for Civic Engagement.  Student-led sessions in the Center create a welcome environment so that Bonners see the space as their own. Snacks are provided and the space is also an opportunity for relationship building within the program.

CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

  • Civic Engagement Council (CEC) - The Center advises approximately 25 student-led service organizations that partner with local, national and international nonprofits.  All of the groups fall under the "CEC" umbrella and the Council Executive Board provides resources, helps to publicize events for all groups and also encourages collaboration during awareness weeks and National Volunteer Week.  The Exec Board also represents all 30 organizations to request funds from the Activities Tax Council and acts as student ambassadors for the Center.
  • Community-Based Learning - The Center is a liaison between faculty and community partners to support project-based community engagement in over 20 courses each year.  One longstanding course is Philanthropy in the Nonprofit Sector, where students administer a philanthropy grant, totaling $10,000, provided through the generosity of the Learning by Giving Foundation.  Another course is taught by the Associate Dean of Students/ Director of Civic Engagement titled Community Engagement and Change which explores various theories of change and requires students to develop their own Proposals for Change in partnership with local not-for-profit organizations.
