CAMPUS AT A GLANCE & KEY FACTS

Centre College is a small, independent, and selective educational community dedicated to study in the liberal arts as the means to develop the intellectual, personal, and moral potential of its students.

Centre nurtures in its students the ability to think logically and critically, to work creatively, to analyze and compare values, and to write and speak with clarity and grace. It acquaints students with the range of accomplishments of the human mind and spirit in a variety of arts and theoretical disciplines. It enables students to choose and fulfill significant responsibilities in society. In short, Centre’s highest priority is to prepare its students for lives of learning, leadership, and service.

A long and rich tradition of tolerance, freedom of enquiry, and community, forms all aspects of college life. Centre accomplishes its goals in an atmosphere of caring and respectful relationships among faculty, students, and staff, aided by its broadly conceived, non-sectarian, Judeo-Christian heritage. This tradition commits Centre to a belief in the unconditional value of each human being, to an appreciation of the differences among people, and to a recognition of the close connection between responsible self-development and community well-being.

All students are guaranteed:

1) study abroad

2) an internship or research opportunity

3) graduation in four years, or Centre will provide up to a year of additional study tuition-free (as long as academic and social expectations have been met).

Key Facts:

  • Approximately 1,400 students from throughout the United States and several foreign countries. Almost all live on campus.
  • Average class size is 18. No large lecture classes; normal maximum class size is 30.
  • Centre has been No. 1 in the nation two of the last three years for percentage of students who study abroad. Approximately 85 percent of students study abroad at least once by graduation. Nearly 25 percent study abroad at least twice.

Need-based aid and merit scholarships offered. Approximately 90 percent of all first-year students receive some form of assistance. The average need-based financial aid award for first-years last year was 63 percent of the comprehensive fee. Renewable competitive scholarships are available for about half of each first-year class—worth from $2,500 all the way to full cost.

Highlighted Bonner Specific Programs:

  •  Centre College After School Program - Centre's Bonners started an after school program for ESL children from local schools. Centre students (not necessarily Bonners) run all aspects of the program including attaining funding, transporting students, planning curriculum and activities, mentoring/tutoring, and assigning mentors. The ASP meets twice a week and has just received a new building on campus for their students.

  • Every Summer, Centre's first year Bonners take a trip to Caretta, WV with the Coordinator and Director to help build or repair housing for people of this impoverished  rural community. This is a great opportunity to experience a different regional culture, build community within the program, and further develop a community partner relationship that has existed for over five years.

CAMPUS-WIDE ENGAGEMENT AT A GLANCE

  • For more than a decade, Centre first-year students have gotten to know each other — and their new community — with a group service project. Previous efforts have included cleaning up Batewood Park; painting projects at Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Blue Bird Market, and the Humane Society; building nature trails at Camp Horsin’ Around, and assisting with maintaining the grounds at nearby Shaker Village, America’s largest restored Shaker community. First-year students, along with upperclass students, faculty, and staff, partner with a wide variety of local service agencies to help them meet some short term community goals.

  • Poverty and Homelessness Week at Centre College is organized by a committee comprised of students, faculty, staff and non-Centre community organizers. For the 2018-2019 school year the focus of the initiative was Appalachian poverty, and the main events of the week included the service exchange, a food insecurity dinner, an education panel, a convocation speaker, and a hygiene product drive.  Poverty and Homelessness Week is an exemplar of campus collaboration with 43 student groups, 9 academic departments, and 13 community partners participating in 7 different events, with attendance totaling more than 795.
